Intoduction and films titles list.

Once upon a time in the 1980's and 1990's I was a big fan of Hindi Cinema and Music. Those were my school and college days. Later that passion fizzled out. Most of my friends were more interested in Hollywood movies and English songs. Watching bollywood movies and listening to Hindi songs, thanks to our convent education, was considered 'not so happening'. जैसे कहते हैं, अँगरेज़ चले गए पर अपनी अंग्रेजी छोड़ गए । वैसे तो यह ब्लॉग भी इंग्लिश में ही है । इसे कहते हैं oxymoron. :)

A few years ago with the advent of the Internet I discovered that there was a large community of followers of Indian Cinema, specially among the NRI's. This enabled me to share my views on the subject with many like minded individuals on various forums on line.

I am from New Delhi, India. The name of this blog comes from an old cinema hall in Delhi: Stadium Cinema. This was a 'talkies' type of a cinema hall, right in the heart of New Delhi, next to the National Stadium and opposite the Delhi zoo. Supposedly sun by the defence ministry, it was inside the army barracks area.

It was a non air-conditioned rectangular structure, roofed with slanting cement tile sheets and non-air conditioned. This all meant that the tickets were damn cheap. There was a small ticket counter, which displayed different ticket rates for the civilians and the defence personals. When I last saw a movie there, the ticket prices were from Rs. 3 to Rs. 6, with a discounted prices for defence personal. Old timers used to tell me that they had seen movies there was as low as 0.40 paise.

There was no raised balcony in the hall, poor sound system, hard seats and no proper lighting. The viewers were only the 'masses' and not the 'classes'. Mostly daily wage workers from bihar and eastern U.P., government school students and some babu's of the nearby offices. This meant that Mithun Chakraborthy was the most popular hero here.

There was no official 'canteen' of the cinema, although there was a snacks shop on the back side of the building. This snacks outlet was originally meant to serve refreshments to the sports persons practising in the adjacent National cinema.

The unique feature of this cinema hall was that it played almost all movies released during those days. Albeit these movies movies were shown here many weeks after the release, it was worth the wait as the ticket prices were so cheap. I saw many movies here during those days. Later with the advent of video piracy, in an attempt to survive, this cinema hall started to show 'B' grade bollywood and hollywood movies in the Wednesday and Thursday evening shows. These movies had their own set of audience and were usually shown in cinema halls during the morning show time.

One last thing about this cinema, that must be written is the gatekeeper. He unfortunately was a physically challenged guy, and had one of his arms amputated. Nevertheless he was very proficient in his work, of tearing his portion of the ticket. A short, dark gentleman, with big eyes. I never saw him since the cinema closed down.

This cinema as many other similar cinema's of Delhi(sudarshan, shalimar, virat, kamal, kumar, majestic, novelty, jagat, chanderlok etc.) closed down in the late 1990's signalling the end of the talkies era. Thus this blog gets this name in remembrance of that time gone by.

Somehow I don't like the multiplexes, they are just too expensive for me and somehow give me an inferiority complex. I prefer a large cinema hall with around a 1000 audience to enjoy a movie.

Therefore since many years now I have been buying vcd's and dvd's of various movies and watch these in the solitude of my living room. Some time ago I realised that I had a good collection of movies, some very rare ones. Some which haven't been heard about by many people. Many are not available now due to lack of demand and copyright problems. Therefore I decided to review these movies, by the way of this blog, and also my intention is to sell this collection(at my cost price) to someone who would need and appreciate them.

As a begining I would list all the movies that I have and then review them in a random order. Here it goes.
